100 Song Challenge
With your support, I’ll privately release 100 songs this year
-
When you subscribe to my Patreon, you’ll get access to the music vault.
In this vault, I’ll place 8-10 new songs I write and record each month.
Some of these songs may be raw, but the quality will be food and real.
By subscribing monthly, you’ll access 8-10 new original songs each month — and these songs will be totally private. I’ll never put them on any streaming music platform. -
All supporters will gain 1 vote each month.
You could vote for 1 of the prior songs I’ve shared, or 1 of the new songs.
Throughout the year, I’ll look at all of the votes and decide which song(s) to professionally record and produce.
After working with the composer of Futurama, grammy award winning composer Felix Weber, grammy award winning Mastering Engineer, Brian Lucey, and Hit Song Engineer Brady Barnett in Nashville, Tennessee — I’m connected to amazing produces who can make a great song come to life.
Your votes will determine which song(s) I produce and release next — which may even lead me to perform new shows. -
For my Top Supporters:
Each month, I‘ll present a private acoustic showcase of the 8-10 songs I release to you.
During this time, we can hang out together, but you can also provide your feedback directly to me about which songs you like and why.
Creation Process
-
To me, songwriting is about authenticity — never try to produce too much out the gate. Not fussing with cables, mics, or editing that pulls away the heart of the creation process. Instead, sketching lyrics, melodies, and playing a new idea live with the simplest and clearest recording possible, natural overflow and acceptance of iterations pulls out points of resonance and builds on them. When we clear everything away, the process sort of takes over until completion.
-
In the recordings of “Falling For It”, you can hear examples of how a new song starts iteratively, with an iPhone recording. For me, the becomes “finished” when I can record it all the way through, live, and it has the bearings of the song together. I know the song will naturally move and change during the production process, so I don’t focus too much on what is “perfect” during the MVP stage.
-
If voted up by supporters, that initial song and recording will advise the studio production version of the song.
In “Falling For It”, I home recorded guitar, violin, cello, drums, and added some other compositional elements. But aside from the instrumentation, spending time with the live recording and transferring that feeling into each element of the recording, then blending things together to create resonance, is the compositional side of the songwriting craft.
I think each artist has their own way of doing the mix, the composition, and production — but when the artist is involved in the full lifecycle of the song, from writing, to initial recording, to final production, I think a lot of the authenticity stays embedded into the intent of the message and the music. Im a purest in this way, but I do thing that that an organic form of music is when the artist “owns” the entire process, even while working collaboratively with musicians and engineers. This requires the artist to gather a lot of different experiences, beyond writing and singing. For me, it really has been a journey fueled by my passion for music to interact with the song and recording, composition and audio, the art and the physics from all angles. I think if you truly love music as a creator, you end up naturally doing this cross-functional development process in deeper and deeper forms.
Christopher Tyng, Composer of Futurama, Suits, The OC
“Once we heard him start singing on ‘Falling For It’, it took us about three seconds to realize that Joey is an artist that needs to be added to everyone’s playlist now. The soulfulness of his voice and the emotion in his lyrics should make millions of people fall in love with him, and provide the soundtrack for at least as many relationships coming together and falling apart, both real and scripted on movie and television screens everywhere. We can’t wait to hear him in person, work with him in the studio, and watch him as his career develops. And we are excited to be able to help that along in every way we can.”
